Twitter Purges Fake Followers & Locks Accounts

Fake followers are a growing concern for platforms such as Instagram and Facebook, as well as micro-blogging site, Twitter. Utilizing “bots” that artificially generate social media accounts, companies sell fake Twitter followers to help online influencers increase their perceived social status.

Last year, research from the University of Southern California and Indiana University claimed that close to 15% of Twitter accounts could be a function of bots rather than genuine users. Beginning earlier this year, Twitter’s attempts to get rid of many fake accounts — both bot and otherwise — has doubled, with nearly 10 million accounts per week being flagged as suspicious in May, and more than 70 million being suspended by the end of June.

Like other social networks, Twitter is stepping up action in an attempt to create a more honest experience for its users. Leveraging automated tools to detect spam and frauds, as well as making it more difficult to register fake accounts, Twitter reports that spam has continued to drop on the platform since new efforts began.

In a recent survey on the attitudes of teens and parents of teens on the concern of fake social media accounts and bots, 40% of parents in the U.S. voice extreme concern over the use of fake accounts to influence products. While fewer teens show the same degree of concern, it’s evident that the issue has grown prominent enough to warrant a second thought.

Additionally, interest in “buy twitter followers” experienced upticks, with the largest spike at the end of January. Interest in “twitter bots” has also seen similar trends, jumping tremendously in February.

The Effect Of Twitter’s Crackdown On Fake Accounts

After locking numerous accounts it considered suspicious, Twitter has now purged tens of millions from their database. While many everyday users won’t be dramatically affected by Twitter’s account clean up, some of the biggest celebrities on the platform have seen massive drops in their audience numbers. The most followed individual on Twitter, Katy Perry, lost more than 1.5 million followers, while Twitter’s own official account experienced the biggest decline, losing more than 7 million followers.

A Universal Problem Among Top Social Networks

Fake followers are not unique to Twitter. Most platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube have also been dealing with variations of the problem. On YouTube, inflated viewcounts supplied by bots offer a quick and easy way for videos to appear more popular. Musicians and authors, as well as other creators and influencers, have used bot services to help promote their work on the densely populated streaming platform.

Artificially manipulating viewcounts violates YouTube’s terms, and while the company works to find and remove them, those who sell and purchase fake views can still find ways to avoid detection. A report by The New York Times found that YouTube has failed to identify purchased views in the past. Moreover, those who sell fake social media activity don’t seem to be flinching. Ads for everything from automated Instagram likes, to inflated YouTube views, to fake Twitter followers continue to abound.

How Businesses Can Protect Themselves From Being Duped By Social Media Fakes & Frauds

The issue of fake followers, views, likes, and comments isn’t going away anytime soon. Even with platforms like Twitter purging fake accounts, clever counterfeiters will look for new ways to get around improved safeguards.

For businesses, working with a fake influencer, or someone who engages in deceptive practices, can undermine consumer confidence. Authenticity is important to social media audiences, and doing anything to compromise trust has the potential to threaten a brand’s sales and overall reputation.

When planning an influencer marketing initiative, it’s important for businesses to research potential partners, including the legitimacy of their following and their track record for delivering results. Reputable influencer marketing agencies can assist brands in finding the best influencers for their campaign by vetting creators, evaluating the quality of their content and audience, as well as assessing past campaign performance.
