UPDATE August 11, 2017 — In the last year, Instagram’s experienced incredible growth. It’s added over 200 million new users, put Snapchat in real danger, added several new features (like Stories, Live, and Galleries) that make it more than just a platform for sharing photos. This post was originally published a little over a year ago, and the stats were impressive then. As you can imagine, they’re even more impressive now. So, in the interest of keeping this article as current as possible, we’ve updated the stats with new figures where available. We’ve preserved the original text, adding clearly marked updates below original text.
Since it launched in 2010, Instagram has quickly become one of the most popular social media platforms in the country, favored by both millennials who love Instagram's content-first format and marketers looking to create brand-sponsored content with the photo-sharing app's most popular social media influencers (called "Instagrammers"). To help companies learn more about the reach, growth, and demographics that use Instagram, we've compiled a list of Instagram statistics that help illustrate the social media platform's immense marketing potential.
1. Instagram Recently Crossed The 500M Users Mark
According to Instagram's blog, the photo- and video-sharing platform now has over 500 million users, 300 million of whom use the platform every single day (termed daily active users, or DAUs). This figure makes Instagram the 3rd most popular social media platform (behind only Facebook and YouTube) and places it well ahead of Twitter (320 million active users), Snapchat (150 million active users), and Pinterest (100 million active users).
UPDATE: Instagram reported in December 2016 that it had just crossed the threshold of 700 million users and in an Q4 Earnings Call, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg reported that Instagram had 400 million daily active users. Instagram Stories alone now has 250 million daily active users. In its S-1 filing, Snapchat reported that it averaged 158 million daily active users.

2. 95M Instagram Photos/Videos Are Uploaded Daily
Instagram users are extremely active–the company's blog reports that over 80 million photos are uploaded to the platform every single day. In total, over 40 billion photos/videos have been uploaded to Instagram since the platform launched in 2010.
3. Over 70% Of U.S. Companies Will Market On Instagram By 2017
A study by eMarketer found that, in 2015, over 32% of U.S. companies with 100 employees or more will engage in some form of Instagram marketing (be it collaborating with top Instagrammers, buying native ads on the Instagram's new Carousel ad platform, or developing/promoting a brand channel). According to eMarketer's estimates, this figure will surpass 70% by 2017.
UPDATE: It’s not just big brands that are getting in on Instagram marketing. Over 8 million businesses now use Instagram Business accounts, and as of March 2017, Instagram now sees 1 million monthly active advertisers on the platform — a dramatic increase over last year, which saw about 200,000 advertisers monthly. What’s more, Instagram reports that in the last month, 120 million users interacted with a business on Instagram by visiting a website, emailing, calling, direct messaging, or getting directions through the app, and 80% of Instagram users follow a business on Instagram.

4. Instagram's Usage Has Doubled In Last 2 Years
According to digital marketing firm We Are Social, Instagram is still experiencing healthy growth in spite of competition from Snapchat and other social media marketing platforms. We Are Social cites a GlobalWebIndex infographic, which shows the total number of Instagram users has nearly doubled from 2013 to 2015.
5. Nearly 30% Of The Total U.S. Population Use Instagram
Over 77 million people in the United States access their Instagram accounts at least once per month, a number that represents nearly 28% of the total U.S. population. By 2018, eMarketer predicts that over 100 million people will become active Instagram users in the US, comprising nearly one-third of all U.S. residents.
UPDATE: Instagram’s seen some growth in its share of users in the United States, which is now at about 78 million. In total, about 80% of Instagram’s user base lives outside of the United States.
6. Over Half Of All Millennials Use Instagram Every Single Day
The Pew Research Firm found that over half of young adults (ages 18-29) in the U.S. with access to the internet use Instagram, and of those surveyed, 49% of active users visit the platform at least once daily. According to the study, 21% of all adults (internet users 18 years of age and older) also use Instagram, making it a valuable tool for marketing to large segments of the population.

7. 50 Minutes A Day Are Spent On Facebook, Instagram
Facebook recently reported that U.S. social media users spend nearly an hour each day on Facebook, Facebook Messager, and Instagram which, after subtracting 8 hours for sleep, represents 1/16 of users' total waking life (New York Times).

8. Instagram Now Counts Video Views
On February 11th, Instagram released an update that would allow marketers to see how many views each video had received (Instagram). 9. Instagram Is The Second-Most Popular Messaging App
Next to Facebook Messenger, Snapchat and Instagram are tied for the second-highest used messaging app for millennials at 47% (according to Sprout Social). Brands should note the shift in how consumers are now communicating (from phone to email to social media platform) and make efforts to be part of the conversation.
10. Instagram Rated #1 App Of All Time For Brand Social Engagement
In December 2015, the illustrious online publication Mashable rated Instagram the best photo app of all time, citing the impact Instagram has had in mainstream culture as the primary reason behind the app's selection. Lastly, Forrester Research rates Instagram as the No. 1 social media engagement tool for brands two years in a row besting both Facebook and Twitter by significant margins.
