Snapchat Spectacles Is The Next $5 Billion Tech Product

Snapchat (now known as their parent company name, Snap Inc.) has a history of disrupting media, social behavior, and cultural norms. Snapchat, the social platform first known for disappearing picture messaging, quickly became the mobile app of choice for teens and millennials (Mashable). So much so that one study even noted that many millennials would rather delete their main calling app over losing Snapchat (Business Insider).

With over 150M current users, Snapchat has been the innovator in the arena of social apps with my many other industry stalwarts lagging behind in feature development directly copying Snapchat’s featured (e.g. Instagram Stories vs. Snapchat Stories). Snap Inc.’s recent release has evolved past the mobile app screen into tech products. They debuted their first hardware product “Spectacles” in November 2016 shortly after it filed privately from its IPO.

As its (predicted) March 2017 IPO date approaches, here’s how Snapchat’s user growth, unit sales, market penetration, and adoption rates will lead Spectacles to become a $5B year product by 2020.

How Much Time Do We Spend On Social Media

How Much Time Do People Spend On Social Media? [Infographic]

Social media advertising spend is projected to reach nearly $36B globally by 2017 with U.S. and Canada spending the most and eclipsing $12.5B in 2016 (eMarketer). In 2015, time spent on mobile apps (not necessarily social media mobile apps, but including) exceeded time spent watching TV for U.S. consumers (TechCrunch). Growth on many of the top social media platforms continues to rise as each network rolls out new features and functionalities to better compete for users' daily time and engagement (e.g. Facebook Video & Live, Snapchat Spectacles, Instagram Stories, etc.).

As such, the amount of people using social is not only increasing, but is accompanied by how much time people are spending each day on social media. Just on Facebook's suite of owned apps along (Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger; excludes WhatsApp), its users are spending an average of 50 minutes each day. In order to see how much the average person will ultimately spend on social media, we calculated the time spent across today's most popular social media platforms and projected this figure across an entire lifetime.
