The professional networking service LinkedIn launched in 2003 and has since become a popular resource used by companies and individuals alike. Bought by Microsoft for $26 billion in 2016, the business-focused social media platform continues to grow.

People use LinkedIn primarily to grow their professional relationships, search for jobs, and share their skills and experiences. The online service also helps companies find new employees, generate sales, and increase awareness around their business. Today, members around the world leverage the site to improve their careers.

The LinkedIn Statistics To Know

Though LinkedIn isn’t nearly as widely used as Facebook, Instagram, or Snapchat the service appeals to working professionals everywhere. Here we’ve compiled the most up to date LinkedIn statistics related to the site’s users and global influence.

1. 467 Million People Are Users On LinkedIn

As of April 2017, more than 467 million people have a LinkedIn account. Of that number, 133 million are from the United States. India, Brazil, Great Britain, and Canada follow the U.S. as the countries with the highest number of LinkedIn users.

2. 25% Of U.S. Adults Use LinkedIn

A Pew Research Center longitudinal study examined U.S. adult social media use from 2012 to 2016 and found that adult LinkedIn use has grown 9% in 4 years. In 2016, a similar percentage of U.S. adults aged 18 and older used Instagram (28%) as LinkedIn (25%).

Notably, LinkedIn beat Twitter in regards to the percentage of adults that use its service. 21% of U.S. adults use Twitter and 25% use LinkedIn.

3. 57% Of Companies Have A LinkedIn Company Page

Companies frequently use LinkedIn to distinguish themselves as experts in their field, share content with individual users, and attract potential employees.

Currently, 57% of companies worldwide have created a LinkedIn business page. For companies that have a page, 46% of the social media traffic to their company website comes from LinkedIn.

4. 87 Million Millennials Are On LinkedIn

Millennials make up 38% of LinkedIn's users globally, and it's likely that this percentage will increase as more millennials graduate college and enter the workforce. There are currently 85 million millennials in the U.S., and by 2025, millennials will make up three-quarters of the global workforce.

5. 122 Million People Have Received An Interview From Their LinkedIn Profile

LinkedIn provides an avenue for job recruiters to contact potential employees personally. A 2017 study found that 122 million LinkedIn users have received an interview through LinkedIn. Furthermore, 35.5 million people have been hired by a person they connected with on LinkedIn.

6. 75% Of LinkedIn Members Have Incomes Over $50K

As one the world’s most popular professional networking websites, LinkedIn is used most heavily among individuals who are college educated and earn a considerable income. Roughly 375 million LinkedIn users make more than $50K each year. A smaller amount, 44% of all users, have incomes over $75K.

7. 57% Of All LinkedIn Website Traffic Is Mobile

More LinkedIn users are accessing the site through a mobile device than through a desktop computer or laptop. Evidently, users prefer to use the site on the go rather than dedicating a large amount of time to the site on desktop. Case in point, the average LinkedIn user spends only 17 minutes on the site each month.

8. 3 Million Jobs Are Actively Listed On LinkedIn

LinkedIn helps companies recruit employees and also gives businesses the option to post job listings. As of 2017, there are more than 3 million jobs posted on the site. Interestingly, users with the skill “statistical analysis and data mining” on their profile are hired more than people who list any other skill.

9. 28% Of LinkedIn Users Have Between 0-300 Connections

Just as other social media sites have “friends” or “followers” LinkedIn uses the terminology “connections” to identify individuals who have access to each others profiles on the site. The largest portion of LinkedIn users have between 0-300 connections each, although 27% of all LinkedIn users have between 500-999 connections. Only 1% of LinkedIn users have upwards of 10K connections.

10. U.S. Search Interest Is 2X Higher For LinkedIn Than 10 Years Ago

Search interest in the term LinkedIn has doubled between October 2007 and October 2017. Interestingly, people in Massachusetts have searched for LinkedIn online more than any other state. Search volume for LinkedIn is second highest in New York and third highest in New Jersey.
