Feature Interview With White On Rice Couple

Based out of Orange County, California, Todd Porter and Diane Cu of White On Rice Couple blog are one the world's most sought after commercial and editorial food photographers, stylists, art directors, and filmmakers. Stemming from their love of cooking and zeal for local culture, gardening, and travel, White On Rice Couple started their blog to share their hobbies and begin writing more extensively about food.

Since the launch of their blog White On Rice, Todd and Diane have fulfilled their dream of authoring a cookbook (Bountiful - selected as Amazon's Editor's Picks For Best Cookbook 2013, with additional rave reviews from Food & Wine and bon appétit), and have been featured in both the Los Angeles Times and Washington Post.

To find out everything from how they got started to their latest travel adventures, read our latest feature interview with top food photographers and stylists Todd and Diane from White On Rice Couple blog:

With your extensive experience as professional food photographers and stylists for restaurants and notable food brands, how did you guys get started with blogging?

We’ve always loved food, cooking, growing a garden and wanted to write a cookbook. But our busy work lives didn’t allow us to pursue our cooking hobby as much as we wanted. Diane had a portrait photography studio and Todd managed restaurants where we both worked over 60+ hours a week. So in 2008, we wanted to at least explore our dream of writing a cookbook and went online to see if anyone was writing about food. To our surprise, there was this huge community of “food blogs”, something which we never knew existed. We didn’t even know what a “blog” was. It was so cool to see people all around the world write in their “online diary” and share stories of their lives.

So we thought it would be fun to have a creative outlet and share our food lives online with our family, friends and the rest of the community. It would be a great way for our friends to keep up with what we were doing. We came up with a quirky, “make fun of ourselves” name because we figured it was a very personal, fun and creative place to be ourselves. Never in our wildest dreams would we ever think it would go beyond “Todd and Diane’s silly personal web page."

Hello. Never thought we would but we did: We got a selfie stick! #familyselfie

Do you remember what your first blog post about?

Our first blog posts were about the garden, food, our food parties and our pups. Fun little snippets of our lives when we actually had a day off work.

How has the blogging industry changed since you started?

It’s changed tremendously because when we started, it was truly a creative space to explore and share our passions. It was a hobby. We and many others back then had no idea about making money from blogging.

Now blogging has become so much about business, branding and used as a platform to monetize and to sell something because of the tremendous opportunities it gives the publisher. That’s not a bad thing at all. It’s just different now compared to back in 2008 when we had no intention (or idea) of how a blog can lead to potential income and exposure of your work.

Where do you think blogging is headed?

Blogging will always be around but with so many other social media platforms, many people use those social platforms as primary ways to share and communicate, rather than reading blogs. People are consuming content much differently because there are so many other outlets to get information and inspiration. But there are those die-hard blog readers that don’t ever go on social media and would rather wait for a published blog post.

Any surprising trends?

From what we know and understand, trends are always focusing on all the new social media platforms and that folks are blogging less. Everyone is spending time on social media and digesting content there because it’s shorter and easier to consume.

Can you recall a certain pivotal moment when you realized your blog was taking off?

When national magazines, newspapers and TV networks wanted to interview us. That was like a “whoa” moment. Can’t believe someone actually thinks two silly kids at “white on rice couple” were interesting enough to cover in print and TV. That was crazy.

You recently announced your partnership with marquee hospitality brand, Fairmont. What can your audience look forward to in this partnership?

Our audience loves anything travel, food and culture related so this partnership is the perfect opportunity to share these stories with our readers. They get to “virtually” travel around the world with us through Fairmont. We’re having so much fun travelling and capturing all these food and culture stories with Fairmont. We’re super grateful. Pinch us, please.

Can you share more about what you love most about travel? Travel keeps us open minded, patient and more tolerant of anything different than our own lifestyles. We love connecting with different people and cultures and seeing all the diversity in how people life, work, eat and breathe. We truly live for those moments that give us experiences and perspectives to something that are totally new to us. Where are your favorite places to travel? So many places, we have no favorites! Even travel 4 miles outside of our town to a new restaurant is exciting. We make the most out of every excursion. But we do love to get on a plane and then land in an exotic place. It’s breathtaking to walk off a plane, into a different country. For some countries, it’s like walking back in time.

Live a life of adventure- just go. Open mind, heart and spirit will take you there. #ToddDianeTravels   A photo posted by Todd Porter & Diane Cu-Porter (@whiteonricecouple) on

Social media has become such a natural extension of blogging and maintaining a presence in today’s digital world – with your main focus on food photographer, how do you keep up with it all?

Oh gosh it’s SO HARD. But we make it work because we know we can’t and won’t do it all. We have balance and know that we do just enough to keep it fun. When blogging and social media become stressful in any way, we know it’s consuming our lives and we won’t let that happen. We still have our day jobs as photographers and stylists to our clients and that’s plenty. Blogging is our happy, creative place and when this space becomes overwhelming, we just walk away for a bit, unplug and go on a personal trip.

What advice would you give to a blogger just getting started? Any important lessons you’ve had to learn along the way?

Don’t ever compare yourselves to others. Never ever do that because if you do, you’re setting yourself up for failure. There is plenty of room in this online space to be yourself and be original. Be real. In fact, our online creative world needs more fresh and original faces and ideas. We don’t need any more copy-cats.
